COMMANDER’S COLUMN

Fellow Members:

I for one am happy to have winter behind us.  The warmer temperatures and the signs of spring are definitely a welcome sight.

At our April 14th General Post Meeting we held our Election of Officers.

Here is our new slate of Officers for 2009-2010 (All officers assume their respective positions at the closing Gavel of the Legion Department Convention in July):

Commander -               Al Danko                     1st Vice - Jim Pierson

2nd Vice -                      Mel Lewendowski        Finance Officer - Jim Winegarden

Sgt of Arms -               Terry Bodell                 Chaplin - Kay Trombley

Historian                      Bob Rohrbach

Congratulations and best wishes to all incoming Officers for the upcoming term.

Our 1st Vice reports that we are at 98% of our goal.  Time is running out, so if you have not renewed your membership for 2009, please do so.  We have a great chance to reach our goal.

F Y I - the dues you pay ($ 35.00) for membership does not all go to the Post, it goes to the American Legion as a whole, here is a breakdown:  Department Dues (Incl. MN Legionnaire) $10.50, National Dues (Incl. Nat’l Magazine) $13.50, Legion Hospital Assn $.25, District Dues $2.00.  This leaves $8.25 for Post dues.

June 14 - 20 is Boys State and Girls State week.   The Boys State / Girls State program is an exercise in applied government.  Selected high school seniors from across Minnesota gather for one week to learn about government, patriotism, and citizenship in a hands-on mock government. Our Post is proud to be the sponsor of 2 Delegates for Boys State - Kevin Yang and Andy Stewart. And our Auxiliary is sponsoring 2 Delegates for Girls State.   All candidates had to write an essay telling us about themselves, family, scholastic achievements, involvement in their community, and their future goals.  It was difficult to pick 2 candidates.  All of the applicants had well written essays, and excellent credentials.   All 4 students chosen were from Champlin-Park High School.

Upcoming events-

May 10th - Mothers Day - Omelet Breakfast at the Post

May 25th - Memorial Day - We will be hosting ceremonies at St. Fridolin Cemetery, Champlin Cemetery, and Veterans Park - Champlin

PRESIDENTS COLUMN

It is so good to say goodbye to the snow and cold weather.  The summer is about to begin and it is that time of the year for many activities outdoors.

May is Poppy month!  Don’t forget to get your Poppy card at the Post.  In 2008, our unit raised a total of $3,055.  That is an 11% increase over the previous year. We have donated $2,500 to various projects to help our Veterans in need.  Thank you so much for your contributions.  On May 15th, we are going to be out in the community asking for donations.  If you would like to help, please stop by the Post and I am sure we can put you to work.  Let’s work hard to exceed our 2008 goal.

MEMBERSHIP:  We are getting close but we are still not there.   As of our April meeting we have 270 members who have paid which is 90% of our goal.  Our goal is 300 so we can achieve this.  I can’t stress enough how important it is that we strive to reach this goal.  Our Veterans programs help out so many of those in need, and without our dues our unit can not donate funds to these important projects. If you have not paid your 2009 dues, please do so as soon as possible.

I mentioned before that our funds from our last bake sale were to be used to help support a Veteran.  I have been in contact with the Family Assistance Center at the Brooklyn Park Armory and we have donated $377.00 to a family in need. We have a Veteran in our community who recently came back from Iraq and found out that he has Leukemia. This family has three young children and our contribution meant so much to them. Please keep them in your prayers as they go through this trying time.

Congratulation to Kristin Mellang, a 6 year junior member of Unit 600, has been chosen for membership for the Minnesota State Honor Band.  Kristin, an 8th grade percussionist was selected from over 700 student’s state wide.  What an honor.

Upcoming events:  On May 10th, the S.A.L will be hosting the Omelet breakfast for Mothers Day.  The cost is only $5.00 and breakfast is served from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.  Bring your Mother and join us for a wonderful meal.

On May 12th, at our unit meeting, we will be electing officers for the 2009-2010 year.  If you are interested in becoming an officer for our unit, please let me know prior to elections.   Our officers will be installed in June and begin their term right after the Department convention in July.

May 25th is Memorial Day.  Please contact the Post for information regarding the Memorial services held in Champlin.

On June 14th, we will be hosting a Pancake and Omelet Breakfast in conjunction with the Family Fun Run held by the City of Champlin.  We really need all the help we can get.  The hours are from 8:30 am – 12:30 pm.  If you have some time, please stop by and help us out.  Also, we will be having another bake sale that day.  All donations welcome.

As summer approaches stay safe and please keep our service members and families in your prayers.

S.A.L COMMANDER’S COLUMN

Good Day,

This will be my last article for the newsletter.  I will be replaced by the new incoming Commander.

I would like thank Legion Post Commander - Al Danko, Auxiliary President - Sharon Rohrbach, all the Officers of the Post, and the Officers and members of the SAL for their encouragement and support during my term as Commander of the SAL.

I wish all the best to our new officers for the 2009-2010 terms.  Our newly elected Officers are as follows:

Commander - Paul Mindrum,  1st Vice – Jerry Henzel 2nd Vice - Jake Dibble,  Finance Officer-Joe Dibble, Sgt at Arms - Cody Mindrum,  Chaplin - Joe Gehlar

Upcoming events:

May 10th ` Mothers Day omelet breakfast (SAL hosted)

May -        Legion Bus Run (check at the Post for scheduling)

JUNE -      Mardi Gras party (at the Post)

JUNE -      Overnight fishing trip to Lake Milaca (check the Post for date & details)

The SAL likes to try new ideas for fund raising events.  There is a lot of time put into planning, scheduling, and executing a successful event. But as we all know, some ideas work, and some don’t.  We take all compliments, or criticism, as constructive information when planning events.  It has always been our goal to achieve the highest degree of enjoyment for everyone.

S.A.L. Commander

Jerry Henzel.

HOPES, PRAYERS, AND CONCERNS

Many of you may not know that we at Post 600 care about your needs.  We want to know if you are ill or if there has been a death.  But we won’t know how we can help if we don’t get a call from you or a family member.  So please contact either Mel Lewandowski at the Post or Dolores Witt (763-712-8524).  Whether it’s to notify us of an upcoming surgery, funeral luncheon, or Color Guard information.  We’re here to help you out.

A Volunteer’s Prayer

I thank thee, Lord, as a volunteer for the change to serve another year, and to

give of myself in some small way to those not blessed as I each day.

My thanks for health and mind and soul to aid me ever toward my goal.

For eyes to see the good in all, a hand to extend before a fall.

For legs to go where the need is great, learning to love, forgetting to hate.

For ears to hear and heart to care, when someone’s cross is hard to bear.

A smile to show my affection true, and energy for the task to do.

And all I ask, dear Lord, if I may, is to serve you better day by day.

We Still need your Feedback!

Post 600 is considering being open and serving a Thanksgiving meal on Thanksgiving Day.  This will be for Members and the local community members that are alone on Thanksgiving Day.  We don’t know if it will be free, a donation or a small nominal charge.  It will depend on the volume of responses we receive.

Also depending on the responses, we may include Shut –In meals.

Two volunteers are willing to deliver meals to Shut-ins.  If you know of any Shut -ins that would be interested in having a Thanksgiving Dinner delivered, please let Jim know or call the Post.  This will depend on responses as to whether we will be open to cook the Thanksgiving meal or not.

We have had responses from volunteers willing to cook and serve a Thanksgiving meal.  We have not had much response from people in the community who woul like to join us at the Post for a Thanksgiving meal.

We would like a response from the Members and community as to the feasability and need for the Post serving a Thanksgiving Dinner.  Please send an E-Mail to jim.winegarden@qwest.com or call the Post at 763-427-6870 and leave your name if you are interested in participating in a Thanksgiving meal.  We will make a decision and notify everyone  in the September newsletter.

Note to Veterans

The VA is not a full trauma center meaning that they do not take all emergencies all hours of the day or night.  The VA encourages you to call 911 and when driving a veteran in, go to the nearest hospital emergency room.  Let them know the patient is a veteran and they need to communicate/notify the VA Medical Center where the veteran receive his or her health care.

President Obama is dropping his plan to bill private insurance companies for the treatment of military veterans who have suffered service-connected disabilities and injuries.

If you have a wheel chair that is getting in your way and you do not know what to do with it, please contact Mel Lewandowski at the Champlin Post.
